The best dentistry we provide is preventive, because it will help you and your family enjoy great oral health. At a child’s preventive dental visit, called a checkup, Dr. Kimmy performs a visual inspection of the teeth, gums, head, and neck. If she notices any abnormalities, such as cavities or inflamed gum tissue, she’ll talk with you about treatment options.
Commonly, babies develop white spots in their mouths called thrush. This is a yeast infection that’s usually easy to resolve, but it does require treatment. Gum disease, an infection of the gum tissue, is also common in children and teens. Other maladies include teeth grinding (while sleeping, most often), tooth chips or cracks, and the need for interceptive orthodontic therapy to ensure that the second set of teeth, the permanent teeth, have sufficient room to grow properly.
We use digital radiography, which emits 80-90% less radiation than traditional x-ray machines, to capture images of the jaw, teeth roots, and interior of teeth. On x-rays we can see developing teeth that have not yet erupted, as well as tooth decay between teeth, where Dr. Kimmy can’t see in a visual exam. X-rays are very important because they remove the guesswork and allow us to diagnose and treat based on facts, rather than assumptions.
When a child is in preschool or kindergarten, he or she will be ready to add cleanings to his six-month preventive dental visits. At a dental cleaning, we remove plaque, hardened plaque called calculus or tartar, and decaying food particles that contribute to bad breath and tooth decay. Cleanings deter gum disease, and they also provide a great opportunity for hands-on brushing and flossing demonstrations. Kids and adults tend to neglect flossing, but this very important preventive task should be done daily, at home. We can teach you and your kids tips to make flossing easy – maybe even fun!
